Legend — The word "amethyst" comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning "not drunk"; the ancient Greeks believed the stone protected against intoxication. According to myth, Dionysus, god of wine, was pursuing a nymph named Amethystos; to escape his advances she asked the goddess Artemis for protection and was turned into a statue of white quartz. Stricken with remorse, Dionysus poured wine over the statue, giving it its characteristic violet hue. In the Middle Ages, amethyst was considered a royal stone, worn by sovereigns and used in religious ornaments as a symbol of wisdom and purity.
