Cordierite, also known as iolite, is a gem of quiet, deep beauty. Its blue-violet hue, which shifts with the angle of light in a phenomenon called pleochroism, evokes the sky at dusk — neither quite night, nor quite day. An invitation to inhabit the in-between with grace.
Emotional and spiritual virtues — Cordierite supports those moving through periods of confusion, hesitation or loss of direction. It clears mental fog, stills looping thoughts and helps rediscover the thread of one's own path. It is the stone of crossroads — of those who know they must choose, and who seek within themselves the clarity to do so. It is deeply connected to the third eye and the capacity to see beyond appearances; it refines intuitive perception, stimulates lucid dreaming and supports practices of visualisation and inner guidance. It is also the stone of spiritual sobriety — of those who seek truth without ornament, discernment without detour.
Legend — Viking navigators are said to have used thin slices of iolite as a polarising filter to find the sun through cloud and fog, earning it the name "Viking's compass". Its name comes from the Greek ios, meaning violet, for the blue-violet light it reveals when turned.
