Formation — Kunzite is a variety of spodumene, a lithium-rich mineral. It forms in pegmatites (igneous rocks) rich in rare minerals. Its colour, ranging from pale pink to intense violet, comes from the presence of manganese. Kunzite is fragile and sensitive to light, which can fade its colour if exposed for too long.
Legend — Kunzite was discovered relatively recently, in 1902, in California, and owes its name to George Frederick Kunz, the renowned American gemmologist who studied it.
