Gazing into it was believed to allow one to read the future and receive visions; travellers wore it as a talisman of nocturnal protection. The nutri variety, with its warmer, earthier tones, was associated in some traditions with the russet harvest moon — a symbol of abundance, gratitude and the wisdom gathered across the cycles.
